A few pictures of Villemer

Villemer is one of the oldest inhabited sites in Moret Seine & Loing.
Archeological remains attest the uninterrupted presence of men throughout the Neolithic period, the Bronze Age, the Gallo-Roman period and the Merovingian Era.

The numerous hamlets which form the village were brought together in the 9th century by the Monks of Saint-Germain des Prés who founded the “Villa Marchais” which would give the village its present name”Villemer” a few centuries later. A Church and a Tithe Barn would complete the village over the centuries.

Today, with 700 inhabitants, Villemer has preserved its heritage and retained its rural spirit in the heart of the Bocage de Gâtinais. The village has done everything to encourage the tourists to come and enjoy walks or bike rides through the rural areas. Paths and picturesque roads cross the village and lead to a variety of viewpoints
in the surrounding countryside, the Orvanne and the Lunain valleys and the natural Pond of Villeron. This pond collects water from numerous streams in the area. From there, an aqueduct meets a more imposing watercourse, that of La Vanne, which supplies the Montsouris Reservoir in Paris.

Let’s also remember the famous drawing artist Germaine Bourret who lived in the village for many years. She was described as “the best drawing artist in the world” by Walt Disney. Her name has been given to one of the village streets, a few metres away from the house where she lived.
